The mansion became a visitor attraction eventually showcasing the ‘Howden Collection’ for a number of years.

A successful wool trader purchased the mansion and 35 acres in 1890. He later sold to Leeds Corporation in 1900

The estate of James Brown was brought to market in 1882, as building plots to be sold at auction.
The Brown Family

James Brown II commissioned Harehills Grove which completed in 1817. His son, James Brown III became MP for Malton.
